Top Fallout 2 Mods You Need

With the popularity of the Fallout show, many people have been looking for Fallout 2 mods to make the game feel more modern and playable. Fallout 2 can be played on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Though on Linux it can be buggy.

Fallout 2 is set eighty years after the first Fallout game. The Vault Dweller from the first game has since died. The village he created is no longer thriving and needs the Chosen One tasked to go into the wasteland and track down a G.E.C.K or Garden of Eden Creation Kit. A great adventure awaits you, as you meet the people of the wasteland and see how the world has evolved since the last adventure.

The mods below improve the game from its original release. A number of the mods come with stability patches while others re-balance the stat numbers. I recommend running the game on Windows, as many mods were built with that operating system in mind. It’s tricky to add the mods using the Linux or MacOS Steam versions. However, if you buy the game from gog.com it should be easier.

Before we start using Fallout 2 mods, we need to add bug fixes to make it run smoothly. Depending on your operating system you will have to install it in different ways. Windows is the easiest, however, if you are running Mac or Linux follow this guide: Linux and Mac guide. The unofficial patch includes

  • Improved running on Modern systems
  • Bug fixes

If you install the next mod, you do not need to install the Unofficial Patch

Restoration Project

Like many games, Fallout 2 had content cut to meet its deadline of being published. However, Killap and the community worked to make this content available to players. Some of the content has been made using his best judgement but it provides a lot of extra content. It doesn’t have any requirements and includes the Unofficial Patch above should make it a rewarding experience

EcCo is an overhaul of the restoration project. Rather than change anything of importance EcCo makes various tweaks and re-balances to make the game more fun than the restoration project originally intended.

Fallout et tu

Fallout 2-in-1

If you love Fallout, but want the features of Fallout 2. Fallout et tu brings the Fallout game into the Fallout 2 engine with all the benefits this brings. The game is far more stable than the original and comes packed with new weapons and features to make Fallout 1 a better game.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Companions level up.
  • Companions can be directly controlled
  • Traverse the wastes on a motorcycle.

Fallout 2 Mods

Fallout 2 mods make the game far more stable and add some extra features. However, don’t expect the game to look anything like Fallout 4. No amount of modding would be able to upgrade the base game to that graphical standard. However, there is talk that the game is being remade with new graphics. So if you can’t stand the CRPG elements of the game it may be worth waiting for the remake to be released.

In the meantime, it may be worth playing Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4 or 76 to get your post-apocalyptic fix. All four are playable with today’s PCs and if you have Xbox One or the Series X/S you can play them all on console. However if you want to benefit from the best mods, stick to Windows PC so you can add mods from a variety of sources such as Nexusmods or modDb.
